Letters to the Future
Tyler looked at me as I checked my voicemail. I must have had an odd look on my face.
Tyler: Who is it?
Me: My ex-boyfriend.
Tyler: Oh? What did he say?
Me: He opened a letter to the future I wrote him 10 years ago when we were 15 and head over heals for each other, and apparently I wrote that if by the time he read the letter if we had broken up, no matter what came between us that he should call me so we can reconcile. I apparently said that as absurd and out of place that it may seem, he should call me immediately. So… I guess he’s following directions.
Tyler: Oh boy.
A few weeks ago my dad insisted I go through all of my boxes that have been sitting in his basement since I moved out, and in one of them I found a stack of letters. One for my sister to open on her 16th birthday, one for my friend George, one for Scarlet. One for Pat, my high school sweetheart- and I mailed it to him in Texas.
When I was a teenager I wrote people I loved a time capsule letter. And now they’re being dusted off and opened. Talk about a blast from the past.
So I called him back and we talked for two hours. We reminisced about our high school romance, our break up, our lives since. We won’t be getting back together but it was still nice to reconnect- to remember a time when I was innocent enough to believe that a 10 year old love letter could change anything.
Tyler: Can you write me a letter to the future?
Me: I sure can.
