Street Vending
I find this photo priceless.
West Chester holds monthly street festivals in the summers, allowing area residents to get their fill of snow cones, face painting, and booths with local crafters, artisans, and businesses.
Whoever is in charge of assigning table locations has quite the sense of humor because my Feminique table was not placed next to the people selling sterling silver rings or the Philly radio station with their speakers set up giving out promotional items. No no. They set me up next to the Republican Committee. Me with my feminist t-shirts, clit cream, and chocolate vulva lollipops wearing a short tube dress next to a bunch of stuffy people in Lacoste polo shirts handing out elephant pins. This is my life.
Setting up my table, I was giggling maniacally thinking about how uncomfortable they were and all the fun they would be privy to being next to me for three hours. Here’s what they got to overhear from passersby who stopped to visit my table:
- Someone asking for a toy recommendation for their F to M trans partner.
- A woman looking at the vulva pops and her telling me it’s been so long since she’d seen one she almost didn’t know what it was for a second, and then us having a conversation about how she should go home and take a look with a hand mirror.
- Chatting with fans of this blog who came up to meet me in person and talk to me about their favorite posts, like when I went to the nude beach.
- Conducting anatomy lessons with guys by pointing to parts of the vulva chocolate and having them shout out the answer. “That’s labia!” “That’s the clit!”
- Talking to older male divorcees about how to navigate online dating.
- Half a dozen people yelling from across the street “Hey Jill! HAHA I can’t believe they put you next to the Republican booth!”.
I must say, however, my neighbors were good sports about it all. And hey, maybe they learned something and that’s what it’s all about!
