That time 305 people lined the streets for a free vibrator!

Free Vibrator Day 2013 was a success! The line was already all the way down the block an hour before the event even started. In all, 305 people attended and got a goody bag containing a free vibrator, my business card (which just so happens to be a condom!) and a coupon for 50% off one of my in-home edu-tainment parties, like Fellatio 101 or The Female Orgasm. What a great day!

I was excited to see so many men in attendance this year. Groups of male friends came out, as well as men attending with their wife or girlfriend.

To entertain people as they waited, and because I’ll use any opportunity to educate a group of people about sexuality, I went through the line playing “vibrator trivia”. The quiz game was lots of fun, and sparked great conversations about how sex-phobia makes it’s way into laws (vibrators are illegal in some places in the US), the technology of vibrators and how they evolved since their invention, and the mainstreaming of vibrator use for all genders. Yay organic sex ed happening on a public street!

I once again had a fantastic team of volunteers helping! I think it really says something about the mission of my work that so many people were willing to  give up a few hours of their Sunday afternoon to be a part of this event.

I continue to be proud and amazed at how many people were brave enough to stand in line for a free vibrator. I love Free Vibrator Day, and think it’s such an important way to get sex-positivity and the normalizing of female masturbation some public visibility.

The local media thought so too! The Philadelphia Daily News did a huge full page write-up about it today (in which my favorite quote is, “Her grandmother, Joy McDevitt, showed up with fresh flowers for her granddaughter yesterday and with a book she had borrowed from Feminique’s “sexuality lending library.” When Joy McDevitt revealed her age - 70 - and was complemented on her youthful appearance, she had no problem sharing her secret. “Thank you,” she said. “It’s the vibrator.”

Preston and Steve, the morning show of 93.3 WMMR, Philly’s rock station, had a nice chat about me and my free vibrator event this morning (I particularly liked the line “She writes a lot on pretty impressive feminist issues”. I always appreciate when men know about/appreciate my feminist activism) . I’ll be going in studio to yet another Philly radio station, 95.7 BEN FM, later this week to talk more about it, and my sex-positive mission around female sexuality in general. Apparently I was nominated as the station’s Women of the Week. Super thrilled!

Vibrators make everyone happy :D
