Happy Birthday Roe v. Wade!
Today is the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade!
This is so important to me as a sexologist, and as a woman, because if you boil it down, women can not be truly free until they can make decisions about their own sexuality, body, and future. Reproductive justice is most imperative to gender equality. Absolutely imperative.
Sarah Weddington is the extraordinary woman who successfully argued the Roe v. Wade case to the U.S. Supreme Court. She was just 26 years old and 40 years later, she still remains the youngest attorney to have argued a successful Supreme Court case.
I got the chance to meet Sarah, as well as Sandra Fluke (with Margeaux) a few weeks ago and it was quite an honor to hear her story of triumph, and the fight she and so many of us are still having in this battle for women’s rights. So thank you Sarah, and to everyone else who has worked tirelessly through the setbacks and misogynist vitriol to do what’s right for women for the last 40 years!
