2012- Year in Review

2012 was quite the year for this sexologist. The year started with me producing my own web based sexology reality show, and ended with me hiring someone to run Feminique full time so I can be a full-time sexuality speaker and writer. In 2012, I completed some major career milestones; I presented a sexuality workshop at Harvard University, remodeled my sex shop, had a line out the door for Free Vibrator Day, finally got to do sexuality related humanitarian work, and finished my Ph.D., making me the only person in the world with a bachelors, masters, and doctorate in human sexuality. In 2012 I revealed Tyler is my boyfriend’s blog pseudonym, and revealed his real name to be Ryan when I told the crazy story about how we intervened on a domestic violence/attempted sexual assault happening outside our bedroom window. I spent a lot of 2012 trying to do damage control on 50 Shades of Shit. But the biggest story of 2012 for me was that 2012 was politically both the War on Women and the War on Sex, and how I worked so hard to make people aware of all the atrocious things that were happening out in the world.   Here’s a recap of the best, and the worst of 2012.

I conducted 104 paid speaking engagements in 2012. Of them there were 6 private consultations, 58 in-home parties, 16 community workshops (conferences, political groups, non-profits, etc) and 24 college workshops on 16 different college campuses with a total of 2,801 people across 10 states and 1 Dominican Province hearing my sex-positive message in person.

My blog received 45,929 page views from people from 154 different countries (including 26 people from Kuwait, and 2 people in Gibraltar! I love this! I love that someone in Botswana and someone in Bhutan read my blog this year. Super cool!). Of those 45,929, 1,311 have read every. single. post. this year. WOW, I’m flattered. EVERY SINGLE POST! People have discovered my blog in different ways, including my website, facebook, or links posted on other websites. However, most people (18,191 to be exact), happened upon my blog while doing a google search. Here are 25 examples of the search terms used in 2012. While I’m a first generation facebook user (I’ve been using it since 2004), 2012 was the year I really latched on to facebook as a tool to spread sex-positivity. Blogging and youtubing is great, but facebook is my fav. I posted 1,669 status updates (that’s averaging 4.5 per day) and had 2,743 friends on my sexology page in 2012. Here were the most popular statuses:

I worked as a certified poll watcher this morning and before I ended my shift, I got to witness a 99 year old woman, who was born in 1913, cast her ballot. When she was born, women weren’t even allowed to vote. Got a little misty (174 likes, November 6, 2012)

Word status with the most comments:

overheard from a group of men walking down the street, reading my sexy Halloween advertisement on the sign: “sexy Halloween costumes? Yeah right. If she went out wearing something like that I’d beat her ass when she got home.” I go run out to make sure I heard that right, so I yell down the street “excuse me” to get their attention but they were out of ear shot. A different guy getting into his car asked if everything was ok. I told him what they said and why I didn’t appreciate it. He said “yeah… well have a good day!” (133 comments, September 27, 2012)

I was featured in the news 34 times in 2012 with a combination of radio, TV, newspaper, and online media reporting, reaching a combined 4,494,511 people (yes, I looked up the Neilson ratings, listener ratings, and circulation numbers for all 34 entities).
