Memoir on Opening of West Chester Sex Shop to Launch on National Orgasm Day
West Chester, PA.: In 2008, Jill McDevitt opened her feminist sex shop (the only sex shop in the country owned by a degreed sexologist) in West Chester, PA. The resulting firestorm not only rocked the community, it made national news. Three years later McDevitt, now 26, has written the story of the tumultuous opening of her store, Feminique Boutique.
Fighting the Crusade Against Sex: Being Sex-Positive in a Sex-Negative World, will launch on Sunday, Nov. 6, with a book signing and reading at Feminique Boutique, 104 N. Church St., West Chester. “Nov. 6 is National Orgasm Day, and what better way to celebrate than with the release of my first book,” says McDevitt, who has never been afraid of a controversy. In fact, the book has already raised a controversy with an online campaign of over 3,000 hits on her blog giving her book a one-star rating – before any copies were available for review!
Part memoir, part social commentary, the book reflects on a series of romantic relationships that sparked McDevitt’s desire to become a sexologist (including the virgin high school sweetheart turned Fundamentalist Christian, and the internet lover turned emotionally abusive workaholic) while contending with insulting catcalls from parishioners, navigating a legal battle, and managing an unexpected local media craze and the ensuing cause célèbre.
Fighting the Crusade Against Sex is a compelling story that exposes our culture’s archaic shame of sexuality, the dangerous ability of the self-righteous to control the law, and the power of the American entrepreneurial spirit.
The book launch event will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Refreshments will be served and McDevitt will read an excerpt from her book at 3 p.m. She will be available to sign copies of the book from 3:15 to 4 p.m. The books ($16.95) will be available for sale throughout the afternoon, and there will be a 20% discount on all merchandise purchased during the party. Interviews with McDevitt may be arranged from 1 to 2 p.m. or after 4 p.m.
Fighting the Crusade Against Sex is the 21st book published by Open Door Publication, an independent publishing company located in Lawrenceville, NJ. The company focuses on publishing inspirational and educational non-fiction books.
