The Female Condom

The new and improved female condom is being sold at Feminique. I’ve been telling people of the benefits:
- Since it’s inserted vaginally, it gives the woman power and control over ensuring a condom is being used instead of relying on a partner.
- Female condoms are non-latex and can be worn by anyone with a latex allergy.
- One end of the condom hangs out of the body, which leads to speculation that there is a little extra protection from STDs like herpes and HPV from around the penis base/labia which the male condom does not cover.
But these are all sexologist fact based benefits. I wanted to try one for myself to offer some personal advice, but I was nervous. They are ugly and awkward looking and I’m not a big fan of sticking foreign object up there. I was on the nuva ring birth control method for exactly 30 seconds because I could stand this plastic ring in my vagina so I assumed I wouldn’t like the female condom either, which also requires the insertion of a plastic ring. But one night when we had no male condoms left… it was that or nothing so I gave it a try.
Surprisingly, I am actually a fan. The plastic ring actually feels good because it’s getting pushed in. Tyler was less of a fan because he “could feel it” but that’s precisely why I did like it. But, you do need lots of lube. Because unlike male condoms in which the condomed penis is moving into the vagina, using vaginal lubrication, the female condom lays still in the vagina, and the penis moves into that, and so the amount of one’s natural vaginal lube is irrelevant, if that makes sense.
